What's the simplest method for drawing a heart in illustrator.?
Not an anatomically correct heart, but a valentine's day type, symmetrical heart. I know I can pull in a heart dingbat from a font. That's not what I'm looking for. Currently I'm using Adobe Illustrator 10. Jonny, by your own admission: "It takes a long time to get good with the pen tool." I'm not so sure that makes yours, while useful, the "simplest" answer.
ah, the almighty pen tool. bear with me... it's worth it... to make a curved line (anchor point) click a spot and drag before you relaserelease the button. then without switching tools, click a spot down below (the middle bottom sharp edge of the heart) then again without switching tools, make a similar curved (anchor point ) up next to the first (these would be the two tops of your heart. then a straight anchor point lower in between... this would be the cleft in the middle top. and finally move the tool back up over-your original point (the cursor will change to signify that you are closing the path) and click. Do not worry that it doesn't look right, paths are editable. The direct way to edit, is the direct selection arrow (the little white arrow) use this tool to select an anchor point that needs to be fixed you can move individual anchor points and the rest of the path will respond... if you need to adjust the curve of a given point, you can pull directly on one of the crossbars (these crossbars are only on curved anchore points.) you can also click directly on the curve and adjust it somewhat... but it is more limited. If your points are wrong, (a curved point where you need a straight point... etc.) you can use the "convert point tool" (pull down from your pen tool in your toolbar)... it looks like an inverted "V" clicking w/out moving on a point will switch it to a straigh point. clicking and dragging will switch it to a curved point. and clicking an individual side of the "t-bar" on a curved point will let you break the vector curve... i.e. curve up out of both sides or whatever. If you want to get more specific with your anchors, you can add or delete points from a path with add/delete anchor point tools (pen tool->pull down) It takes a long time to get good with the pen tool.. but it is by far the most useful/powerful tool in illustrator... you can also adjust any other objects you have by direct selecting the object (white arrow) and then manipulating the points in a similar fashion... it will take a few trys, but in the end you'll be glad you learned it.
